What are the main mathematical and physics concepts I need to know fully to understand fluid mechanics and thermodynamics? I've just started a mech e degree (still freshers week) and I've heard some scary things about these two topics.

Presumably by the time you get to them you will have covered that material. They aren't gonna put a course no one is prepared for on the curriculum you drip.

ok well first according to thermo dynamics orderly systems devolve into chaos and to disprove it you can look at a sealed clear plastic container with fluids in it. both gas and liquid. now drop it. as it falls it goes from orderly to chaotic . when it hits the ground its still chaotic and then seconds later its orderly again. gravity has forced the liquid inside to pool at the bottom

Well then if you really want to get a head start on fluid dynamics you can start by looking through the textbook "vector calculus" by Paul matthews, it's quite brief with some good exercises, not too expensive either and your uni library will probably have it. This is suitable for someone who already knows some calculus.
