I'm reading Midnight in Chernobyl right now and while it's explaining what the helicopter crews went through it's mentioned that the temperature quickly rose from 10 degrees C to 65 degrees C.
Would that sort of heat be caused simply by the beta particles and gamma rays shooting up in the air or was it just the burning graphite causing that heat?
