Dude, I studied in a shitty public school in my poor neighborhood, here in Brazil, in I saw proofs (yes, I had an useless teacher for half a year, but the one that took her place was really good). We saw proofs of the binomial theorem, lots of combinatorics and some linear algebra identities, etc.
Pythagoras, Tales, etc we saw proofs of in middle school (but to be fair, I went to a good middle school run by the Church).
Even on my brainlet highschool we had physics and math with derivations of formulas and somewhat serious (but simple) arguments.
Just how bad is American education?

I'm basically in the same boat. Never heard of the concept of a proof until geometry, and when we did it was those retarded two column proofs. Only class where we actually learned some proofs was Calculus, since it was taught by one of the only good teachers in the school and was retard proof.

Basically at the start of 1900 some far seeing entrepreneurs got together and decided they need workers not philosophers or scientists.
Their plan was stopped with the start of WW1 and continued at the end of ww2.
Its really sad that the American public was at no point informed of this even though it went through government first and got approval to import the Prussian education system.
There are few interesting anecdotes in the book about the American Army and how bad illiteracy was during Vietnam,so much in fact that the military launched investigation to see what the fuck is going on with the public.
They discovered what the author of the book discovered and lowered the bar for joining the military.

Teachers at my school told to do shit like join the theatre club or to read fiction to enlighten our young spirits, not to look up mathematical proofs n all that.
As a matter of fact, I became more interested in mathematical rigor and proofs while studying philosophy and reading Kant's Critique of Pure Reason than I ever did through 12 years of mathematics (which was really just calculation exercises involving rote memorization).
Not once in Geometry, Algebra, or Calculus was I ever told to prove anything, nor did I ever have to question why things are done the way they are done. The way I was taught by my shitty third-world teachers was to do whatever the fuck the textbook says for the sake of passing class.

Weird, usually high school math teachers are decent because the powertripping cunt type teachers are all drawn to English and the lazy types are drawn to social studies, leaving the decent teachers for math

well then derive it. i can give you a hint: you need to add/subtract *something* on both sides to make it look like a^2 - b^2 so you can (a-b)(a+b). the rest will be obvious.

You do all these in your proof classes in undergrad math. But honestly, why wait? You can just use Google and work from there.

no i mean knowing $(a + b)^2 = a^2 + 2ab + b^2$ you can start with a simple nice equation to see the pattern:
$ x^2 + 6x + 5 = 0 \\ x^2 + 6x + 5 + 4 = 4 \\ (x + 3)^2 = 4 \\ x + 3 = \pm \sqrt{4} \\ x = -3 \pm \sqrt{4} $
and then you can derive the general formula based on that. you start with a general expression $ax^2 + bx + c$
and try to figure out how to convert it to $n^2 + 2nm + m^2$ so you can then $(n + m)^2$ .
you do some manipulations with $ax^2 + bx + c$ and variable substitutions to finally make it look like
$(n + m)^2 = ...$ and you solve for $n = -m \pm \sqrt{...}$
and substitute back and you get your formula
