The point is when you teach math as magic spell diagrams to be memorized rote, you set students up for failure as soon as things get even a little bit abstract.
I had a math professor tell me about the sad experience of teaching the remedial courses at uni like precalc, students know "FOIL" to multiply two binomials but give them a trinomial and they just freeze up because their magical method doesn't work,
If we introduce decomposition of numbers, set theory, etc. early, they'll actually have some time to think about it before it blindsides them in more advanced courses.
Also, students start exercising a really valuable math skill at a young age; namely, struggling hard with concepts until they become clear. Promoting a growth mindset over the fixed mindset, and all that.
