>>10977907It follows from some assumptions, so at least in the sense of mathematics you just end up with that result. Of course from a more modern point of view you can rearrange the whole argument a bit, which also demystifies "c" a little, so the simple version goes like this:
a) Require that all of physics has to be the same in all inertial frames
b) Require that causality has to hold
.. after some fancy maths, here are the results:
1) There is an upper speed limit at which information can travel
2) Massless particles, such as the photon, happen to reach that velocity
We just got used to "the speed of light" being this mysterious velocity since it was all about light when this part of physics kicked off. It's really the "upper limit velocity" or whatever the heck you wanna call it. There's some neat books on the matter, such as Sexl & Urbantke's book.
