Hey /sci/ I'm writing some videogame physics and I started to thinking about the term 'unsprung mass'.
You often hear car people explain to you how weight savings in the unsprung mass of a vehicle is worth much more than the equivalent savings in the 'sprung mass'.
Meaning the part of the vehicle that is suspended off the ground by the suspension geometry.
I understand how reducing the angular mass off the wheels and brake discs would make a big difference since they generate gyroscopic forces when driven.
But is there something special about the unsperged mass in and off itself?
Like if I removed the brake calipers from a car would it handle significantly better (til I had to use brakes lol) than if I removed the same weight by stripping out the interior?
