I can see the value, especially if you want to pursue a career in teaching. Also in general, being able to explain something to a student (as opposed to an expert) is a good exercise to check how deep is your understanding of a topic

Yes, mathematicians write a lot, and it's not all just stating definitions, theorems, and proofs. If you intend to be one, expect to do a lot of writing explaining -why- you're working on certain problems.

Klein vignettes are normally -longer-. Visit the site in your instructor's pdf and look at the description and examples there. They're making it easier on you since you're a student and it's a homework assignment, not something that's going to be published.

It's a rip off. If you signed up for driving course and they asked you to write an essay about traffic laws and pavement or some other tangentially related stuff to driving, you would want your fucking money back.

That is retarded, but once you go to grad school this type of shit, along with paying pearsonniggers for online codes, goes away. It's probably not even your professor's fault, the school most likely has a policy where students are required to write at least x amount of pages per semester for the class. My undergrad uni had that, but math and some other classes were exempt.

It's asking you to explain the concepts so that
A) the teacher can make sure you actually understand the process
B) you can cement the ideas in your brain and possibly come up with a new understanding as you write/think about it.

You've clearly haven't done any serious maths yet. Maths papers are often long and can be full of words, PhDs theses can be hundreds of pages. If you write like a spastic you'll make a worse mathematician.
Check out this paper by Cambridge electrical engineering professors, it's a piece of garbage.

It's unnecessarily wordy and pointlessly poetic instead of being a clear concise laser guided delivery of knowledge. Getting gud at writing takes practise so don't get so angry when you're asked to write a very short essay to prove that you can do it. In a professional context after uni you may have to write reports for your boss. For your dissertation you'll be writing a heck of a lot more than a few pages.

Probably easy enough once you think about it. have a look for some examples at the very least to get an idea of what they want.

My guess is to pick the topic and then write few short paragraphs about its history. "XYZ was first discovered by Mr ABC in the 16th century blah blah blah". Then some stuff about its proof. Then some paragraphs about its historical applications "XYZ proved useful to ABC industries/military/economic applications/processes". Then some stuff about topics related to it, or how it fits in with a broader topic. That's pretty much it. Finally for an A grade write something original which you think it could be developed for.
