by virtue of evolution we're driven to only retain knowledge that is immediately useful to our survival, and in the instance of one's employment, only the aspects of your degree that are used are retained
it's for this reason that mass enrollment in universities is an expensive waste - not because learning to that level isn't good - but because it's more knowledge than is required to perform the job role they're likely getting the credentials for to begin with, and will forget most of the rote memorized facts anyway, thus defeating the purpose outside of excessive red-taping
