I was thinking about this, and surely a way of reducing deforestation in tropical regions is to increase the long-term productivity of soils.
Tropical soil is very nutrient-poor and cannot sustain agriculture over multiple seasons, meaning that to sustain food production, more land needs to be cleared.
What strategies are there to facilitate this change to fertile soils like terra preta (pic related) and why are they not widely applied?
