I work at a pharma company and all my bosses claim to be super scientific but really have really bad interpersonal or communication skills. I've seen it at 2 or 3 labs I've worked in so far, but I hear it's pretty pervasive for a lot of professional labs. It's such that you often have a lot of people working in an environment where the lead scientist is just really bad at people management so a lot of work isn't done properly because everyone has a hard time dealing with people in power in those departments.
It seems almost cultural, or just an inconvenient reality that some people with higher levels of scientific experience who are in positions of power don't usually get along well with others, because to be successful in science it can make you single-minded on a subject. In short, they're nerds who aren't socialized well. We definitely need more open mindedness, but that doesn't mean we can't build on what has been discovered. We need more leaders who are reasonable and open to new ideas, not dismissive. Or at least more human.
