I was talking to a girl at work the other day and she had something on her face, maybe a crumb or a little fuzzy ball. I said "oh, you have something here," and touched the spot on my own face that corresponded to the part of her face that she should brush to remove the speck. It was on her right cheek (my left) but I touched my own right cheek in demonstration, and she knew to touch her own right cheek to remove the speck.
The interaction immediately struck me as odd, because it seemed unlikely that she would have known to reverse the direction instead of mirroring my behavior. I then realized that it was just as odd that I reversed the side that I indicated in the first place.
What do you make of this? Which side of the face do you think most people would brush if you indicated that something was on their face using your own right cheek as an example? Would you expect any other characteristics of a person to correlate with which side they would brush? What other thoughts do you have on this matter?
