Do any of you learn mathematics or philosophy recreationally?

I did a CS degree a few years ago now, and I just barely made it through. I'm now 27, and have been working as a software engineer for a few years, and I am finding myself properly learning some of the shit in my spare time that I didn't manage to learn in high school or university, and enjoying it.

It is.

a) I only studied undergrad Comp. Sci.
b) I didn't do very well in it, because brainlet
c) It wasn't taught as deeply or as rigorously at other Universities (I'm not even an Amerimutt).

In fact, there was the requirement to only take one 100-level maths paper for it. I took a discrete math paper.

It's really the only thing I do in my free time.
I made 300k++ with cryptocurrencies in 2017, I also got /fit/ in 2014 and look fairly good. I didn't have a good means of spending the money (more than wage slave money is really only good for being able to travel and save up for later) and I got rather sick of pussy - fapping is quicker, less messy and, more often than not, the orgasms are better if you do it yourself. You need money and pussy to get rid of the anxiety of not having it, really. Life is rater void, so the only clever thing to do is find an activity you like and go on doing it.

Good thing about the world is that humans are sometimes able to create aesthetic things and novel thoughts. I search for good /lit/ (mostly history and /phil/) and learn /math/ and some field theory. Everything else is a meme. Pic related.

I took a high school calc course this year to catch up on some stuff that I didn't do well in in high school. It helped me learn some methods to gain competence the second time around, and enjoy it.

The rest is learning what *you're* interested in learning.

I personally think that BTC will see the 20k benchmark again, but you saw law week how it went from 10.5k to 9.5k and back and so there's no good reason it wouldn't dump 1k again right after you buy. Takes a long practice and earnest pursuit. I don't learn in static instances, but in layers and layers and layers of reading/watching/learning. Sometimes new layers will peel off the old layers and replace them. I read daily on a "interest/spark" based pursuit, and not in any hard schedules.

All the fucking time. I was an pretty good student comparatively speaking, but I really only put in the minimum possible effort that I had to get an A/A-.

I studied physics and never cared much pure math. Now 8 years later I probably spend 5-6hrs week working through graduate math texts. Proof writing becomes comfy after a while. I have mostly replaced video games with studying and problem sets.

This is the golden age of self-learning. Pick a subject, and you can probably find multiple semester-length courses on the subject taught by leaders in the field for free on youtube.

About a year or so. Started because I needed to brush up on linear algebra for work project (I'm a software dev at Raytheon). Found I was having fun so I got a graduate text and worked through it. Then I just finished an abstract algebra text. I'm starting on a differential geometry text now

Of course, you forget what you don't use or reinforce on long term basis and especially with weak conceptual foundations. That's why one of the reasons I play the long game and the quest to build the foundation of the concept first. Once you get a good foundation for a concept, you then build up the auxiliary and reinforce the foundation. Foundational building requires molding the concept you're learning to fit into your current worldview. I'm not certain how everything works, but I'm certain thats how most people build long retaining memory.

First solidify your own foundation for worldview that is constantly challenged and patched or discarded/adapt a new one. I've constantly and actively sought to change my worldview for 10 years and changed my worldview to fit the reality via reading/arguing/discussing/doing thought experiments/interrelating with what I know/etc. Its always a background task for me now. Models of your foundation must match the models of the foundation of the new concept you're learning. If there's a mismatch, you figure out where the problem lies and fix it, whether that is the new concept or your worldview and then retroactively fix all your other concepts that rely upon your worldview if such were required.

When I go back to the subject, or encounter it anew in some other setting, I find I see it differently. I can then remember how I thought about it then, and when I reconnected with the idea, it is different.

I think this has to do with the Dunning Kruger curve, where your first exposure gives you a confidence that repeated exposure destroys up to a point where you are no longer surprised by different presentations of the same materials and your confidence increases.

Then again, I might be different. I am more interested in the concept than any praxis, and so am willing to gloss over specific application problems to get the bigger picture. Since the bigger picture is what I am after, I consider it a fake understanding if all I can do is set problems created for a book. So it may just be that for science and math, since the presentation is not one of understanding but of being able to do problems, it takes different sources or sources not specifically from pedagogy to get to an understanding.

Great point about forgetting. Its a boon as it allows you to see things in new perspective. Now that I recall, I also sometimes read/re-read the same old texts, watch the same old videos, for a thing I'm interested in. With few months of breaks in between, sometime I can gain a different/new perspective that I may not have had previously and it can change your understanding greatly. So maybe its a great thing to forget once in a while or revisit what you "know" every few months/years or so.

of course there are more and some anons would disagree with this starting list but it's a start.

in general i learn by problem solving. so i pick a problem that is easy enough to understand and then try to solve it. this leads to learning a lot of maths i wouldnt know otherwise.
just learning maths without context is rather hard for me.

I studied cs for two years and then I switched to maths. Currently third year undergrad.

I like to study phil on the side. I got interested in Deleuze, but realized it's too hardcore for now, so the last thing I've studied is Kant. I read his Critique of Pure Reason. I recommend not doing that, but reading secondary lit, Deleuze's lecture on Kant, and of course Stanford Enc of Phil.

You can stop with Kant at the point when you can explain what the 'schemata' are in your words.

Not him, but I double majored. I loved my analysis and algebra year sequences, and they taught me a lot, but a lot of their research pours into many other fields. Symmetry is a huge thing in physics and algebra is the basis of ridiculously important CS problems around hilbert’s nullstellansatz, etc. Trust me when I say that the math department is not the end all be all of all research into these structures

It was an interesting post, but Dunning Kruger isn’t real and contradicts basic human behavior patterns. we vet competence far too effectively for that kind of delusional and systematic error in judgement to be widespread, most people know about how bright they are and tend to very slightly overestimate when it benefits them psychologically.
