Does anyone else experience an illusion that a stalled escalator is slowly moving in the opposite direction when going up or down one? Am I literally the only one who experiences this?

No but I kind of recognize the phenomenon from other contexts. I think it has to do with the object being big enough to be a frame of reference, sort of, that you're expecting to stay in motion.

Its normal. Your brain assumes escalators to be moving, but when its moving, it doesn't match the assumption and thus you assume its going reverse.
