They've been pushing hard on hydrogen since the early 2000s, had significantly more investment than the electric car and yet has come nowhere near commercial viability like the electric car has.
Among many many other reasons, storage and transport is an issue and once you sorted that you've got to spend billions on building on stations, pipework, transportation, processing facilities....and hydrogen production is currently less efficient that charging an electric car (several times)
And if you solve all that....you want loads of idiots driving around with a higly compressed explosive gas? A fender bender would destroy a city
