Actually pretty sure they are powerful enough to destroy our sun. We are more valuable as an object of scientific discovery. Still, certain nations have stolen some of their hardware and that has upset them. It has ruined the experiment. Since then they have been leaving more of their junk lying around in the hopes that said nation will develop sufficiently for them to justify war.
The ayylmaos want the experiment to continue though so I am sure certain members of our population have been selected to preserve our species. It is unlikely that those selected are among the elites, who will probably also survive.
