It was known essentially from the start that there are wave solutions to the Einstein field equations. However, due to conceptual difficulty in understanding an oscillating metric, it wasn't known for some years whether any of these solutions definitely corresponded to an actual physical phenomenon. By the 30's, however, these gravitational waves were widely considered to be real physical phenomena and became a hallmark feature of General Relativity. If you think LIGO has at all contradicted GR, you're badly misinformed.
