Atoms for instance, started to reviled their presence when chemists were discovering more elemental substance. The elements where originally organized on the periodic table according to their molar masses. Also the thermal physicist Ludwig Boltzmann proposed his kinetic theory of gasses, which depended on a discrete particles of gas....this was controversial at the time and he never saw it come true. Instead he an-hero-ed himself. There were further discoveries at the last quarter of the 19th century were dark lines appeared in spectrographs of the sun's light. This could not be explained using the classical model of newtonian mechanics at the time....a glimpse of quantum phenomena. The real breakthrough was when physicists started experimenting with electricity and vacuum tubes. This led to the discovery of the electron and a crude structure of the atom in the beginning of the 20th century. Around the same time, 1900, Max Planck modified Boltzmann's laws to allow for quanta of energy of particles to form an explanation of the "ultra-violet catastrophe".
The history is interesting indeed.
