The cause was low budget tv shows in the 1970s and 1980s needing a plot device. Same goes for quicksand, which does exist but nowhere as commonly as tv shows of that era would have you believe.

The Burmuda Triangle is directly above a sunken continent that was once home to an advanced civilization. Methane, I believe.
There has been some speculation that certain lost ships may have sunk because large deposits of methane broke loose, bubbled to the surface, and because the water is being aerated it fucks buoyancy up and the boat would just sink like a rock to the bottom of the sea before anyone knew what was happening.
Pretty spoopy stuff, but I don't know that there has ever been any corroboration to any of it.

Sadly, the definitive book on this is out of print. If you can find a copy, and want a textbook example of how to look into a "mystery" and find out what, if anything, is really going on, try to get your hands on a copy.

People who hate favorite mysteries being solved/debunked won't like it, but anybody interested in weeding out baloney from any actual mysteries ought to read it.
