I have been thinking about learning optics and photonics - I find them fascinating. It's either this or more computer science.

How based is the field, can you even learn this at home or you need expensive equipments to actually do stuff?

I did Geotech engineering but wanted always to do physics - hoping to pick up masters on a part-time basis.
