Sure, join a lab and get started on something that interests you. But it's not going to be as grandiose as you may expect. Keep your grades up, show some aptitude for research (this will also give you something to talk about for a personal statement), make some connections for LoRs. Do a summer REU if you're not at a R1, go for a school you're targeting for your PhD if possible.
