This creates a valid, but extremely weak, structure that we can't really use for anything worthwhile.

Not really. Besides, according to most schools of the philosophy of math, all numbers are Platonic, in so far as they are all constructed.
It is silly to say that 1 is "real" because you can have one apple, but pi isn't real, even though you can represent it (albeit imperfectly) every time you draw a circle.
