The tidal force at the event horizon of a black hole drops off with increasing mass. Stellar mass black holes would rip you apart before reaching the event horizon, but for super massive ones you could pass the event horizon without noticing any tidal forces.

The image also shows the orbit of earth around the sun. We know that it takes ~8 minutes for light from the sun to reach the earth. So you can get a rough estimate of how many minutes it would take based on how many "orbits" you can fit along the diameter.
