He had a photographic memory and he could recite by heart any book after reading it just one time. Not only he was knowledgeable in math and science, he also read a lot about history. A professor of Byzantine studies once said that von neumann probably knew more about the history of Byzantium than he did.
He was a genius and played in easy mode, but he still had to study. It's just that studying was much easier for him becuase he was crazy smart and had a superhuman memory. So he had a lot of spare time to party hard since studying was so much easier and faster for him.
