Pic related shows LIDAR scan data of a few Classical Maya cities from the Peten basin in Guatemala, the study in question showing that the periurban, suburban, and rural sprawls of the cities in the basin stretched out much further and were more developed (tons of interconnected canals, resvoirs, drainage systems; plus walls and barricades, ceremonial cores, etc) thjen we previously thought, including Tikal (the captial of one of the two largest Maya kingdoms) having a megalopolitic sprawl connecting it to other cities.
