For me it was the college class Advanced Robotics. I met a Dutch guy in there who knew a shit ton and I became his lab partner. He invited me to his room to study and I was taken aback by all the mini robots he had built himself. It was freaking amazing. I had no choice but to suck his dick about it, but sometime between the full nelson and the reverse cowgirl I thought to myself "I could build a robot where i can control the rhythm and depth for my pleasure".

So that's where I would start. Finding your passion.

From what I know the majority of programming done for robots uses functional programming so I'd start with SICP assuming you have high school maths

i suggest your local library first they need 3d printers then we colaboarte with the venus project and transform our crappy librarys into emporium 2020's with ai learning and random projects linking our info gathering with works of art from knitting to kit bashing on a global scale
