Because it's a metaphor that breaks down as soon as you move past positive integer multiples.
I prefer the metaphor of stretching a sheet of rubber. Generalizes to linear algebra.

It doesn't break down for rational numbers. There's a trick you can do ;) But I believe it does break down for irrationals. Stretching is pretty based.
