What for you might be a passing, forgettable comment, the truth of which is self evident, is to them a declaration of war, one which they will not rest from until they have won. They are ideological fanatics. In different circumstances they would have been the administration staff in concentration camps. An exaggeration? No. They are people with no concept of truth other than its corrupted version which they use as a tool to control other people. They have no self reflection, no individuality. They fall into line with what they are told to believe and they do not question it.
These are people who will devote enormous effort, time and resources, no matter how irresponsible their actions are, to crushing any dissent to their world view. Their actual power will wax and wane depending upon historical, social, economic and political influences. Its just better you understand that such people will continue to exist in any society at any time.
That said, I personally would find all those fucking portraits to be visually annoying.
