So I am a GRA working at a university. I came up with an idea for an accelerometer and can't find anything online that uses this thing in this way. How do I know for sure if my idea is original? Should I talk to my advisor? My research is sponsored and I'm paranoid about sharing my idea, because I don't want it stolen by my Jew sponsors.

Check the patent office for similar worded patents as the one you are thinking of. Use it in inventions. Keep it to yourself until its patented.

Patent attorney here.

Depending on your country you will have a right to be recognised as the inventor and (again depending on country) may have to hand over the invention to your employer or whoever is funding you.

Most likely you signed a document you never really read that describes your duties to disclose any new inventions.

This depends on whether or not his research has anything to do with the invention or whether funding was made for a particular or general acquisition of intellectual property.

Most of these contracts are as wide in scope as they can and then some. Universities and funding bodies all want to grab hold of a bit of the next Google, FB or whatever the next success will be. Since OP hardly read the fine print he has essentially sold his soul already.

Not sure what you mean by burning an idea. If you mean burying, yes that happens. However old contracts will be scrutinised if OP ever has great commercial success later with the same idea. This also happens.
