In my country, France, women were given the right to vote late, in 45. Why ? Because the conservatives didn't think women ought to vote because they're not men, while the progressives thought they shouldn't because they would vote conservative. So no one was willing to pass that law.
And as it turns out, the progressives were right : for decades after they were given the right to vote, they mostly voted to the right, and kept the socialists out of power.
Over time though the difference between genders disappeared and since the 2000s men and women in France vote about the same regarding the left/right balance.
