I noticed that the 3d model and the skeletal model on wikipedia of benzaldehyde are rotated a half turn from each other. Are there conventions for the way that compounds are rotated when chirality doesn't matter? Is there a standard way to present 3d ball and stick models?

The convention is that you draw the lowest energy state, so for example you draw amides in trans conformation
