Involuntary speech

What is responsible for the phenomenon of involuntary speech in response to, for example:
>stubbing your toe ("ouch")
>bumping into someone ("sorry")
>dropping something ("whoops")
>having an embarrassing thought or memory (swearing, usually)
>surprise ("hmmm?")
I\m particularly interested in how these little outcries can be changed with training. The reason is that in that fourth case--an unwelcome thought--I have over the past few years started muttering very rude and insulting words under my breath, and since thoughts can happen anywhere, it is only a matter of time before someone hears, landing me in serious trouble. What can I do to train myself to say something minced, or better yet, nothing at all?
