I can see how learning the thing and multiple casual attempts could take an hour but once you get the idea to actually start from zero and crank out a 2048 is a 5-15 minute process depending on luck.
Dumb corner mashing is actually a very favorable early-game tactic. If you don't get a nice orderly clump, you just reset and try again.
