What are some good operations research books to read? Especially ones that involve Calculus and higher levels of Math/Applied Math?

Can someone explain this field to me? I asked a op research dude once what this was about and he kept babbling about linear methods to find averages or some shit. He works in an oil and gas company

i did a half ass course in my uni about this topic, its basically optimizing real world problems with mathematical procedures, usually involving multiple variables which can be transformed into a system of equations and simplified by the simplex algorithm. it was kinda cool but i think we did a very little part of the topic.

this, but not only the simplex algorithm is used. Actually, Operations Research is kind of an "old" name. You should think of it as just Mathematical optimization methods applied to real world/industry problems.

OR is a broad, 1940's, name, not an academic field per se. For example, I had some game theory introduction in my first OR course. There is intersection with statistics too, just throw some uncertainty on your variables.
