These arguments occur because engineers have a chip on their sholder as their theorising is limited to real world problems and mathematicians are butthurt because while they're fucking around with nonlinear algebra and hypothetical topology engineers are building bridges and hydroelectric damns.

Calculus is so well structured by hundreds of years of optimization that you can teach it to a computer (e.g. wolfram alpha). You do not need to understand it very well to use it, but most end up understanding it pretty good nontheless. Test your understanding by trying to prove it yourself next time you forget something.

OP writes a boring anecdote about one of those people; a person who is not even a famous scientist, a president of a country, or any other interesting individual.
