He has a degree in mechanical engineering which is a STEM field but does that qualify the title "scientist"? What exactly qualifies you as a real scientist? Which educational fields?

Sure. It is a science, it was from a reputable school, so I say he's a "science guy". A strict definition of scientist is probably someone who actually does experimental research... but then if I say that the theoretical physicists get mad.

As as actual scientist I say, yes. He isn't claiming to be a research-scientist, nor hold any accreditation he doesn't actually have.

'Science guy' isn't a formal term. He uses media to talk about science; I think the term is appropriate. His political views do nothing to change this.

He had a short engineering career which he gave up to do sketch comedy. "The Science Guy" was just another goofy character on Almost Live. But it caught on and was turned into its own show. Which is great for his acting career but doesn't mean much as far as science is concerned.
