Why do they call it computer science instead of informatics in some countries?

Informatics is actually a broader discipline than computer science, so the countries that call computer science "informatics" are being slightly inaccurate.

At my school there was only one class specifically on informatics and compsci majors weren't allowed in it. Not sure why.

Translation issues and associations of one field with the other. Informatics is about how information can be organized and harnessed in an engineering context - think of it as the study of how people can make systems of information to solve problems. Computer science, as fucking terrible as the name is, is the study of computation and how it interacts with our traditional declarative mathematics. In that sense, computer science and information theory are very broad studies on something fundamental, while informatics is constricting the study to methods in what make it immediately useful.

The Spanish term informatics (informática) comes from French and the union of information and automatic, meaning, in short: automatic information processing. In French, the electronic device that processes the information called “ordinateur”, hence the Spanish word "ordenador" and that is why we do not use the Anglo-Saxon terminology “computer”.

In italy we call the computer 'computer' and the mouse 'mouse' because we are spineless mannequins. We have death penalty for ketchup on pasta, though.

And the reason is literally >>10907578 informatics sounds like something straight out of a Lem novel, computer science is something a 1960s congress member can understand and throw money at

In Denmark computer science is datalogi, where -logi is the suffix as we see it in psychology etc. So I guess it might actually translate to data science.
