Water can be compressed, but it's just really hard to do compared to air.

I'm sorry, wouldn't the non-compressibility of water facilitate sound travel?

If water was super compressible, then the wound waves would be absorbed by the water and it wouldn't travel very far. It's like sound traveling through solid rock VS a pile of squishy sand. It moves through the rock better cause it's solid and doesn't compress.
