>>10914450I'll tell you right now that the mental health treatment systems we have in place aren't flawless, but they're the best we've got. I've worked a fulltime job with acute mentally ill people closely for an entire year. I've even had a roommate that went into THC induced psychosis. So personally and professionally, I can tell you the need for institutions like where I work are needed.
You have to meet a certain high standard of criteria to be committed to a facility (in the state of WA):
1. Gravely disabled on the grounds of severe deterioration of routine behavior or inability to take care of basic needs.
2. Danger to self.
3. Danger to others.
All of these criteria are based on the mental illness being a direct effect of one of the causes above. You can be marked for one or more of these criteria. At least one mark will get you admitted. The papers are read of court evidence for commitment are often frightening. Someone going into a drug induced psychotic break and attacking their family, or trying to break into a neighbor's house, etc... I've heard it all.
My point is, of course there will be cases where injustice is done by the patient. Every brain is different. Every event and experience contributing to their deterioration is their own unique story. It's hard to find what is correct treatment for every patient because of this. But you need to understand that you can't narrow down the cause of the deterioration by having then as a threat to the public community. It is necessary that they are detained so we can solve and rehabilitate them into the public. It's for everyone's safety including their own.
