It turned into a huge race thing, especially when the audio of Mark Fuhrman (LAPD) saying "nigger" was submitted to prove he perjured himself. The atmosphere at the time was blacks in general being really suspicious of cops abusing their power and disproportionately targeting, assaulting, and generally ruining the lives of blacks to the point where many didn't even *care* if OJ did it. The more important thing was sticking it to the police. And as a more legitimate pretense for the verdict, once it was revealed a key detective on the case had on the job witness interview tapes that were so explicitly racist he could be convicted for perjury over it contradicting his denial of racism under oath, that provided the grounds to doubt anything the justice system was trying to establish about the case since it could all just be biased or outright falsified evidence manufactured by prejudiced and self-serving authority figures taking care of their own people at the expense of the black community.
Cannot emphasize enough the racial component of the OJ trial.
