Throughout human history people have described beta males as the ones who lose interest in society because they have no stake because they don't pass on their genes.

Maybe pursuing a gf or other personal stuff isn't the way to get motivated? Using a gf or interest in the stuff you can do with STEM, as a carrot on the stick to motivate you maybe doesn't bring out the best in you?
Maybe like every animal there is, being a parent does that?
I thought about it and imagined it and I was suddenly overwhelmed with a desire to improve myself so I could raise and protect that imaginary child.
