White man living in Taiwan here. Google translate is really bad. I hear about AGI taking over the world but google’s can’t even figure out what I mean in a simple sentence. Layman here so please explain it like I’m five.

Translation has come a long ways for languages in the same group. Mandarin is too different from European languages so it's harder to translate.

Not OP but I lived in Taipei in the 90's.
Best place in asia. Shame about cross straight tensions being what they are.
Most people speak enough english you can communicate with chinglish.

Serious answer: all natural languages are logically inconsistent and thus interpreting natural language is not something that can be neatly done according to an algorithm.
