>>10899388well that’s solid state physics for you. that’s not even considered “theoretical physics” any more, that’s now “applied physics” so it is messy. theoretical physicists who cover solid state are now called “condensed matter” physicists and even they are considered more messy than the real high level theorists, i.e. high-energy theorists.
high-energy theory is all beautiful math, that’s why Witten won the fields medal and ignited all the pure mathematicians interest. in fact one of the criticisms lobbed against high energy theoretical physics (by e.g. sabine brainletfelder) is that high-energy physicists are TOO obsessed with mathematical beauty.
