Cancer is when a cell in a multi-cellular organism attempts to evolve as a single-cell organism and treats the rest of the host as an environment/substrate. Single cellular life dominated the planet for three billion years before multi-cellular life emerged within the last billion. Gene pathways evolved by our single-cellular ancestors are often the most ancient, encode the most basic functions, and are highly conserved.
