You count 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. At some point you realize there is nothing preventing you from keep adding 1 and getting larger and larger integers, so you realize that the axiom of infinity might very well be true. Are we SURE it's true? Of course not. But are we sure of anything? No matter how many black crows you see, there could always be a white one. This shit is even older than Popper and goes back at least to Hume. It doesn't matter whether our mathematical axioms and our basic laws of physics are "true"; the only thing that matters is whether they allow us to make accurate predictions about events. If they work, good; if they don't, let's try something else.
