Nuclear fusion creates radiation (heat and light) and makes stars glow, but how does the radiation generated within the core of a star manage to penetrate through the surrounding layers?

Smaller stars, like red dwarfs, do it through classic convection. Bigger stars, like the Sun do it through radiation because the pressure inside is so big that no convection occurs on the lower layers (and it is slow as fuck taking hundreds of thousands of years to reach the surface).

Photons are particles that carry radiation through space. Let's say each molecule in the Sum emits a photon, so two molecules right next to each other would be twice as bright as one. The brightness is directly correlated to the number and density of these photon-emitting molecules. The gas that comprises the Sun is transparent under normal conditions, so we're able to see (in a sense) all those photons combining their strength in the center.
