It's been said the US gave them the knowledge and materials to make nuclear weapons to begin with. Which is in line with the odds that the cold war was theater to justify societal reorganization.

USSR was very successful BECAUSE they cut corners in engineering and poured all of their money into research and industry. There were benefits and repercussions to their approach, I don't really think they gave a fuck about radiation killing hohols anyway.

I'm a bit bummed that the 2400 and 4800 MW versions were never built because those were essentially RBMKs stretched to even harder to manage lengths.
Imagine the disaster you'd have when one of those inevitably exploded.
