I don't realy know how to point out exactly why the potential exists, but considering natural selection on molecular level, not just purpose of natural selection (which gives only generalization of its function) probably would help. Also, what does "long" mean? It's pretty relative.

Because they're genes. They're not programs that have been designed to function in a certain way, and so they have unintended side effects. If it isn't a trait that is considered significantly negative, then there's no reason for evolution to select against it. As such, we get old people, cancer, and red hair.
