As for Op's question, virtually all programmers were women because virtually all repetitive tasks were given to women, and only women knew what needed to be automated, how best to automate it, and how best to manage the automation itself.
Programming was a secretaries job, along with the vast amount of information processing. Companies used to devote fully 80% of their office space to information processing (the reason downtown office buildings lost their edge to suburban offices just like Bessemer steal plants lost out to BOS and EAF facilities was because of this inefficient design for modern computer based business.)
The real question is about giving credit but not because of some imaginary gender war. The question is about destroying the elitist myth that ignores the absolutely essential contributions of every person in an operation.
The question is about the elitist myth that justifies the outsized rewards given to the exploiters.
It is the exploiters who conveniently forgot about all those women and men who actually made humanity successful, and who themselves contributed more to their self aggrandizement and myth, then to the actual human contribution.
