Ok so I just had a WAY better idea than my previous stupid bullshit. Probably moderately unlikely but hear me out. What if in relatively recent history (say the past few thousand years, to coincide with religion), the moon and the rest of the solar system were just much physically closer together and so much more easily traversible? Could have even been atmosphere between them.
