In the past, this could only happen with a war, coup, or some other type of conflict. The US found a way to transition power peacefully. Maybe there's a peaceful way to reboot a civilization? I'm sure there's a way it's theoretically possible, but whether it's within the reach of any civilization currently on Earth is a different matter entirely.
